Swiss species condition

Where a tree species grows, and how it is doing there. Combines the 30 m Swiss species composition with the monthly vegetation condition indicator (Sentinel-2, June–August, 2017–2026).

3D overview

The whole country on a 1 km grid.
Ground colour: the dominant tree species in the cell.
Bar height: how far condition sits from normal. Colour gives the direction: red below normal, green above. A typical year is flat ground.
Opacity fades the bars. At 0% only the composition is left.
Click a bar to read that cell.

Moving the 3D view

Pan: left mouse / one finger.
Turn and tilt: right mouse / two fingers.
Zoom: wheel / pinch.
One axis only: hold an axis button, left edge, and drag.
Fixed angles: Top, Left, Right. Position and zoom are kept.
Reset: Home, back to the whole country.

2D species view

Pick a species, a group (Coniferous, Broadleaf) or All. Several species can be on at once; a pixel is kept if any one of them clears the share below.
Set Species share: the minimum basal-area share that species must hold in a pixel for the pixel to stay on the map.
Colour = Vegetation condition: red is worse than that pixel’s own average, green better, white normal.
Colour = Distribution: shades by the species’ share instead.

Data

Composition: basal-area fractions of 10 species groups plus Other, 30 m, from a deep-learning model over aerial imagery combined with satellite, structural, climatic and topographic data.
Condition: Sentinel-2 L2A monthly median composites, cloud-masked with QA60, SCL and Cloud Score+.
